Impact

The Sector

the European Textile and Clothing sector, including fashion design  (EU 27), with an internal consumption of nearly 500 Billion Euro, is the largest world market for textile and clothing products. The European industry is the second world exporter in textiles as well as in clothing. The 2011 data include: annual turnover above 178 Billion Euro, exports outside the EU-27 reaches more than 38 Billion Euro, the 146.000 companies (90% SMEs, average 12,8 workers per each, 60% with less than 50 workers) employ about 1.8 million workers (Source: Eurostat, 2011)

Consequently, the collaboration of IT solution provided by Somatch and industrial end user SMEs has European dimension and a very extended potential impact.

Somatch platform will be also open to further extension to other related sectors (interior design, architecture, home furniture, footwear, automotive among the others) to enforce EU historical leadership in those sectors where design and creative research is the key success factor.

European Fashion design SMEs

the European textile sector includes a huge number of small companies, most of them specialized in highly-priced and sophisticated fabric production; the collaboration and mutual cost reduction among such companies requires a certain level of information sharing, mostly regarding customers' views and broader (or global) demand trends. However, the access to complex analytics and sufficiently large volumes of demand data remains expensive and difficult for companies of small to medium size; hence the need for a data source that can be easily acquired and shared among collaborators (i.e., social media), coupled by appropriate forecasting and mining tools, i.e., the approach proposed by Somatch

Access

ICT solution provided by Somatch will be accessible to SMEs as a Soas architecture in order to be affordable to industrial SMEs. Somatch will be able to provide fashion SMEs with the information to exploit their design, flexibility and creation potential at their most, providing a set of new and not yet available indications to lead their proposals towards the satisfaction of present and growing trends, of new market niches and of social economic needs not yet satisfied.
